Vietnam’s northwestern border with China and Laos offers an unparalleled diversity of tropical landscapes. Mu Chan Chai is located in the northwest and is surrounded by steep mountains with rich tropical vegetation, pine forests, and emerald rice terraces. Amazing carst limestone may be found in the Red River Delta, creating a maze of caverns and canyons. The rhythms of millennia are still present in the village life here. Farmers tend to their cattle, develop their land, and sell their goods in local markets. We will head back to Ha Noi after our last day in order to catch our planes home.

Each sampan is led by a boat person who rows with their feet rather than their hands, male or female, and they make excellent photographic subjects along these gentle waterways, past towering karsts, and into dripping grottoes that will paddle through.

Photographing subjects on an exotic rowboat is usually a terrific idea. The wildlife viewing, which includes the Delacour’s Langur, one of the most endangered primates in the world, and the black-faced spoonbill, will be next.
