( Established in 1211 by the Teutonic Knights, it was later inhabited by Transylvanian Saxons, who transformed it into one of the seven fortified citadels in the area. With the building of its fortifications and the founding of the first Romanian school in 1495, the city emerged as a major medieval hub for trade and culture.)

( Situated between the national parks of Bucegi and Piatra Craiului, the mountain settlement of Măgura in Transylvania is 1000 meters above sea level. Until 50 years ago the settlement could only be reached by foot or with horse and wagon. For this reason, farmers continue to uphold and practice local customs. This village offers fantastic views of the mountain area with spectacular fall colors in the autumn season.)

( Situated in the Eastern Carpathians’ Ciomad volcano’s volcanic crater, close to Tușnad in the Natural Reserve of Mohoň, Harghita County, Romania, Lake Sfěa Ana is the country’s only crater lake. Will spend the night at Tusnad Hot Springs, a mineral-rich volcanic region in Romania’s Transylvania region that is well-known for its healing waters and spa, Baile Tusnad. Iron, magnesium, and calcium are among the minerals found in the waters of the hot springs, which were created by historic volcanic activity from the Ciomadul Volcano.)

(The Bicaz Gorge is located in the counties of Neamě and Harghita in northeastern Romania. It is a part of the Cheile Bicazului-Hăşmaș National Park and is located in the heart of the Hăşmaș Mountains. A crystal-clear river flows through this gorge, which is surrounded by woodland and colorful hanging gardens perched atop the canyon rocks. We will then proceed to Vāori Park, which is one of the few locations where European bison (Bison bonasus) are seen.)

(Salina Turda is a salt mine located in the Durgău-Valea Sărată neighborhood of Turda, the second-biggest city in northwest Transylvania’s Cluj County. Salina Turda opened to tourists in 1992 and was listed as one of the “25 hidden jewels throughout the world that are worth the visit” by Business Insider in 2013. This is where salt was initially extracted in the Middle Ages. From the first mention of the mine in 1271 until the early 20th century, it has consistently produced table salt.)

Rimetea is located in a valley 23 kilometers (14 miles) north of Aiud in the Apuseni Mountains in central Transylvania. The settlement is situated on the banks of the Rimetea River at an elevation of 650 meters (2,130 feet). It is located in the Trascău Mountains, between the peaks of Piatra Secuiului (1,128 m; 3,701 ft) and Ardaşcheia (1,250 m; 4,100 ft). Rimetea is remarkable because of its location at the base of Piatra Secuiului, where the sun appears to “rise twice”—once over the horizon, once below the mountain, and once again. The Apuseni mountains are formed by European beech, silver fir, Norway spruce, larch, Scots pine, birch, and sycamore maple.
